Meet the 2023 Nova Media Fellows

August 24, 2023

We had a tremendous response to our inaugural Nova Media Fellowship program and thank everyone who helped us spread the word and all those who applied for the fellowships. We were thrilled to receive outstanding applications that covered a diverse and fascinating range of topics — it was quite a challenge to select just three fellows from among this impressive group.

We also offer our sincere thanks to our outstanding Media Advisory Council, who helped us shape the program this year and determine the final candidates. Thank you Virginia Hubbell, Mark Hyman, Jackie Judd, Jayne O’Donnell, John Schidlovsky, and Rich Stone.

Please join us all in saying congratulations to our cohort of 2023 Nova Media Fellows!

Virginia Gewin will investigate the public health impacts of novel fine particulate matter sources, notably emerging pollutants such as microplastics, algal toxins, and supercharged wildfires. Her work has appeared in Nature, Science, Bloomberg, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Discover, Popular Science, and many others.

Kate Morgan will investigate Appalachia’s plight and promise, particularly the health of Appalachia’s people and its landscape, in three main subject areas: the effects of extraction, caring for communities, and healing the hills. Kate’s work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, BBC, Sierra, Harper’s Bazaar, Popular Science, National Geographic, Popular Mechanics, Forbes, Saveur, EatingWell, Slate, USA Today, Huffington Post, and other publications.

Lela Nargi will cover the intersecting crises of water poverty and food insecurity in the United States. Her work has appeared in Civil Eats, The Counter,  Food and Environment Reporting Network, The Guardian, Leaps, Mother Jones, Modern Farmer, The New York Times, and USA Today, among others. She is also the author of more than 20 books for children.

We are thrilled to support their projects as they help us increase public understanding of the complex, intertwined connections between the health of people, places, and the planet.
